Batter Breakdown | Can Manny Machado and Padres get to Corbin?

We have a typical split slate on a Thursday, but today we have seven games early and a five-game main slate to break down. The day slate features a lot of get away day situations and the lineups may be quite interesting, while the evening slate has a little of each. A big question tonight is if Manny Machado and the Padres can get to Corbin. There are some great hitting spots to targets so let’s see who we like for both slates in today’s Batter Breakdown.

Early – The Rockies will be facing the lefty Jose Quintana on a get away day and that means Chris Iannetta is in play. This season, Iannetta has a .332 wOBA, a 20% HR/FB and a 34% HH rate vs LHP this season. He’ll look to run into one vs Quintana today. Peter Lambert is getting called up by the Rockies to start today and you may get a little value with Victor Caratini. This season, Carattini is slugging .441 with a .363 wOBA a 33% HH rate vs RHP this season. More importantly, he usually hits in the middle of that potent Cubs lineup. Brian McCann and Steven Vogt are a couple of other options today.

Late- Jason Castro is in play if you want to keep attacking Trevor Bauer and his recent struggles. But if you go cheaper you have some options with Josh Phegley or Nick Hundley vs Skaggs or even Jonathan Lucroy vs Fiers.

First Base

Early- Paying up at 1B may be a popular thing today as we have Josh Bell, Freddie Freeman, Pete Alonso and Anthony Rizzo all in great spots. If going cheaper, it’s worth looking at Yandy Diaz vs Daniel Norris, who has had an odd season. But one thing is for certain, RHH have hit him well. This season, RHH are hitting .293 vs Norris with a .330 wOBA and a 40% HH rate. If looking to punt, get weird with Joey Votto or Mark Reynolds running into one vs Quintana.

Late- Edwin Jackson is starting for the Jays tonight and that makes the Yankees a great spot. Luke Voit has been sneaky good this season vs RHP. He’s hitting .275 with a .385 wOBA and a 28.6% HR/FB vs righties and should crush tonight vs Jackson. Some cheaper options would be Ronald Guzman vs Hess or Wil Myers vs Corbin.

Second Base

Early- Derek Dietrich (also 1B eligible) may be risky, likely more of a GPP play, but has a very intriguing spot to Mr. Pitch to Contact Miles Mikolas. This season, LHH are torching Mikolas to the tune of a .300 average with a .575 SLG, a 2.4 HR/9 and a 43% HH rate. It’s always risky with Dietrich but that upside is huge in GPPs. Javy Baez has been streaking of late and is still too cheap for his matchup today vs Peter Lambert. A couple of cheaper options would be Jeff McNeil vs Anderson and Nicky Lopez vs Weber.

Late- Gleyber Torres and D.J. LeMahieu are both great targets vs Jackson, but they aren’t the only ones. Tommy La Stella is coming off a big Wednesday night and looks to continue that vs Mike Fiers. LHH have a .325 wOBA and a 39% HH rate vs Fiers this year and La Stella leading off makes for a nice cash game play. If you want to be contrarian, Lourdes Gurriel Jr is in play vs Happ. A few punts would be Rougned Odor, Hanser Alberto and Chad Pinder.

Third Base

Early- Nolan Arenado is quite expensive today, but faces the lefty Quintana and he’s mashing lefties. This season, Arenado is hitting .371 with a .496 wOBA, a 1.241 ISO and a 42% HH rate. Some may say, “well that’s because of Coors.” Maybe, but not much as he is hitting .323 on the road vs LHP with a .483 wOBA and a 1.221 OPS. Basically, he’s crushing LHP this season. Kris Bryant is definitely in play for your Cubs stacks vs Lambert. If looking to punt, target Colin Moran, who is streaking and faces Folty or Christian Arroyo, who’s been hitting lefties well and hits in the middle of the TB order vs LHP.

Late- Anthony Rendon and Howie Kendrick make for some expensive options vs Lucchesi, but still in play. When going cheaper, you target Matt Chapman vs Skaggs. This season, Chapman is mashing LHP with a .416 wOBA, 1.040 OPS and a 42% HH rate. Skaggs is giving up a 44% HH rate vs RHP, so Chapman and more of the A’s could be in play. Vladimir Guerrero Jr had a big night on Wednesday and makes for a nice GPP play vs Happ who’s giving up a 44% HH rate to RHH. Tommy La Stella, D.J. LeMahieu and the ridiculously too cheap Manny Machado are also in play. Third Base is loaded tonight.

Early- Trevor Story comes into Thursday’s contest scorching hot. He’s 13 for 25 over his last six games for a .520 average with 7 extra base hits. He’ll be facing Quintana, a LHP, which Story loves to do in his career. Story is expensive, so you may want to go cheaper and there are a few options. You once again have the streaking Javy Baez, a sub $4K Willy Adames vs Norris or Adeiny Hechavarria vs Anderson.

Late- As mentioned above, Manny Machado is too cheap tonight and is a really good play, if even just a GPP play vs Corbin. But going back to the high priced options you have Jorge Polanco vs Bauer, Elvis Andrus vs Hess, Gleyber Torres vs Edwin and Francisco Lindor vs Berrios. A lot of high priced targets or you punt with Machado and Marcus Semien.

Early- When starting at the top of the pricing Avisail Garcia, hopefully, Tommy Pham and even Austin Meadows fit the mold vs Norris. Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez vs Danny Duffy is quite the awesome spot. The Cubs outfield, especially Kyle Schwarber and even Jason Heyward and the Cargo punt are in play. With Folty on the mound, the Pirates are once again in play so target the LHB’s of Bryan Reynolds and Gregory Polanco. If you want some contrarian angles, then the Marlins are in play again, Lo Cain and Ryan Braun are in play vs Smith and Nick Castellanos are a few of those options.

Late- Mike Trout is in a smash spot once again vs Fiers, along with his teammates Kole Calhoun and Shohei Ohtani (I like him a lot at only $3900). The Yankees outfield of Aaron Hicks and Clint Frazier make for some nice targets vs Jackson. You can try and attack Bauer with Eddie Rosario and Max Kepler. Don’t sleep on the Padres OF of Wil Myers (really good BVP vs Corbin), Franmil Reyes and Hunter Renfroe. Nomar Mazara and even Delino DeShields Jr are targets vs Hess.
