Batter Breakdown 5/12

Batter Breakdown 5/12

We’ve reached another Sunday Funday of MLB action and also a Happy Mother’s Day for all the Moms out there. We have a 9 game early slate to get you ready for today. There’s some solid SP options today and then a bunch for us to attack. As usual on Sunday’s we will have more of a cliff notes version compared to your normal weekday breakdowns. We will also have a quick glimpse at pitchers to target. Now, let’s see who we are targeting on today’s MLB DFS action with the Batter Breakdown.

Starting Pitching– Like recent days pitching is quite top heavy. If you are paying all the way up today it’s all about Noah Syndergaard vs the Marlins. Yes, Thor has been a bit broken of late but also has one of the best matchups you could hope for in baseball and we will look to target that in cash and even GPPs. If saving some cash it’s all about Thor’s opponent in Caleb Smith. Smith has been outstanding this season and brings his near 30% K rate into action, leaving hughe GPP upside. Dropping into the $8K range it’s all about Martin Perez and his new cutter vs the Tigers or Griffin Canning vs the O’s. I prefer Perez over Canning but both definitely in play. At $8K there’s Lucas Giolito for those that want to take a bit more of a risk. Gio is pitching in Toronto and there near 27% K rate, so the upside is definitely there with Gio. Lastly, if looking to punt, and I don’t like it much, but it’s John Means vs the Halos. Means has been a bit of a roller coaster ride, but as a whole he’s been effective and has more upside than the others in the “punt” range.

SP Recap- Thor, Caleb and Perez is where my focus is at with Gio, Canning and Means for some savings.

Hitting Preview

Catcher- It’s rather simple for me today, well at least when it comes to the catching position. If paying up it’s all about Mitch Garver vs Daniel Norris. RHH are hitting .353 vs Norris and we will look to exploit that once again. If you want to stay on the Twins but save some money, Willians Astudillo has been activated from the IL and I wouldn’t mind being all aboard that train. When leaving Minnesota we head to St. Louis and target Yadier Molina vs Steven Brault. RHH are hitting .366 vs Brault over the last 2 seasons and I’ll gladly jump on that Cardinals train today. Lastly, if looking to punt it’s a supercheap Francisco Cervelli vs Dakota Hudson.

First Base

Cash- There’s a lot to like at first base today and we’ll start with the CJ Cron who we used as a GPP yesterday and he crushed and has an awesome matchup today vs Norris. Cron went 5 for 9 in yesterday’s double header, with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs. He’s riding a 4 game hitting streak into today’s action and looks to continue feasting on left handed pitching.

GPP- Albert Pujols, yes Pujols is in play for us today. He’s going up against lefty John Means. On the season Pujols is slugging .548 with a .310 ISO and a .340 wOBA vs LHP. Pujols has 3 home runs in his last 2 games and on Saturday I tweeted out some statcast leaderboards for some positive regression candidates and his name popped up on all of them.

Other First Base Options- Jose Abreu, Josh Bell, Hunter Dozier, Paul Goldschmidt, Justin Smoak, Ji-Man Choi, Ronald Guzman

Second Base

Cash- You can easily just pay up at second base in cash and us Whit Merrifield vs the lefty Irvin. I am fully on board with that. If you are looking for some savings though you drop below $4K and take a look at rookie Shed Long as he plays in his second game and gets Hector Velasquez. Or you can also go to Adam Frazier vs Dakota Hudson who is struggling vs LHH this season as they are hitting .414 with an .814 SLG.

GPP- Michael Chavis should get a chance to flex his muscle vs Marco Gonzales today. If you want to save a little cash we go back to Jonathan Schoop vs Daniel Norris.

Other Second Base Options- Eric Sogard, Jonathan Villar

Third Base

Cash- Lots of ways to go at 3B for cash. You can pay all the way up for Alex Bregman vs Sampson. That’s always a solid start. But, if looking to save there are a lot of ways to go. Willians Astudillo is definitely cash game viable. Or, you can look into David Fletcher likely leading off vs Means. Fletcher is slugging .340 with a 44% HH rate vs LHP this season.

GPP- Michael Chavis is once again an option at 3B, just like 2B above. If looking to get different I really like Yoan Moncada vs Sanchez. This season Moncada is hitting .300 vs RHP with a .580 SLG and a 40% HH rate.

Other Third Base Options- Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Colin Moran

Cash- We have another top heavy day at SS. Jorge Polanco is in an awesome spot vs Norris. If looking to save some you have Andrelton Simmons vs John Means. Lastly if you want a sub $4K play then J.P. Crawford is worth a look. In AAA this season Crawford was hitting .319 with a .457 SLG and brings some speed to the base paths as well.

GPP- For GPP it’s all about going Paul DeJong or Adalberto Mondesi in there solid matchups. DeJong is in a smash spot vs Brault, but we do know DeJong hits RHP better than LHP, then again he mashes everyone these days. Mondesi will be going from the right side of the plate today. We prefer him from the left, but in a matchup vs the youngster Irvin, he’s in play. If looking a little cheaper then Jonathan Villar vs Canning.

Other Shortstop Options- Eric Sogard

Cash- I am not going to list all the OF that are in play today, but there are some smash spots. Obviously Mike Trout is in a great spot vs Means and there’s a reason he’s the highest priced option. The combo of Mookie Betts and JD Martinez vs Marco is a really solid look. The Astros are always live, but especially Michael Brantley and Josh Reddick today. Marcell Ozuna mashes LHP making him a really really good look today, but don’t forget about his teammate Jose Martinez. Gregory Polanco has been swinging a hot stick since his return and we’ve already documented Hudson’s struggles vs LHH. Don’t forget his teammates Melky Cabrera or even Bryan Reynolds for some savings. Some other cash game saving targets are Odubel Herrera and Harrison Bader.

GPP- Some GPP targets today including the Rangers thump of Joey Gallo and Nomar Mazara vs the youngster Martin. Mitch Haniger and Domingo Santana shouldn’t be slept on vs Velasquez. Jorge Soler and maybe even Alex Gordon are in good spots vs Irvin. Byron Buxton and Nelson Cruz make for some fun today, but don’t forget their lefty counterparts in Eddie Rosario and Max Kepler as lefties are hitting better than righties early on this season vs Norris.
